Assam mourns the sudden loss of its beloved singer Zubeen Garg, who tragically died during a scuba diving accident in Singapore on Friday. The 52-year-old artist was part of an 18-member yacht group when the incident occurred.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed that Garg had initially worn a life jacket as advised by lifeguards but removed it shortly after, citing difficulty in swimming due to its size. Despite immediate CPR administered by the lifeguards, Garg was declared dead at Singapore General Hospital.
The Indian High Commissioner in Singapore, Shilpak Ambule, informed the CM that the yacht crew and safety personnel had repeatedly urged the singer to wear the safety gear. Singapore authorities are now questioning the individuals who accompanied Garg.

The group included 11 Indians: Abhimanyu Talukdar, who booked the yacht and is from the Assamese community in Singapore, four members of Garg’s team, and two crew members. CM Sarma stated that the Union Home Ministry would be approached for proper procedures to question those involved.
An autopsy is scheduled for Saturday, with plans to bring Garg’s mortal remains to Assam the same evening. Sarma also announced that the singer’s body will be kept at Sarusajai Stadium, allowing the public to pay their respects. Final rites will be determined in consultation with Garg’s family and the people of Assam, honoring his lifelong connection with the state.
The Chief Minister, accompanied by his wife Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, visited Garg’s residence in Kahilipara to offer condolences to the family. Assam and fans across India are now grappling with the loss of one of their most cherished cultural icons.
