An exhibition showcasing art from the United Arab Emirates has concluded in Seoul, offering a deeper and more nuanced perspective of Emirati life beyond commonly held stereotypes. The show, titled Proximities, was hosted at the Seoul Museum of Art and featured works from 47 UAE-based artists.
The exhibition aimed to challenge perceptions of the UAE as a symbol of luxury and excess, instead presenting themes of identity, social change, and everyday life. Curated collaboratively by international and local experts, the showcase included over 100 artworks spanning photography, video, and installation art.
Artists such as Farah Al Qasimi and Mohammed Kazem explored topics ranging from urban transformation to migrant experiences. Several works also addressed deeper socio-political realities, including cultural shifts, gender perspectives, and evolving landscapes in the UAE.
The exhibition was a joint initiative between the Seoul museum and the Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation, reflecting growing cultural exchange between the UAE and South Korea. Organizers highlighted shared histories of rapid development and transformation between the two regions.
Rather than promoting soft power, the exhibition focused on authenticity, giving voice to diverse perspectives, including strong female narratives and reflections on social change. It offered visitors a more grounded understanding of the UAE’s cultural complexity in a global context.
