China is getting ready to host the world’s first marathon where both humans and robots will race together. This event will take place in April in Daxing district, Beijing. The race will be a half-marathon, covering a distance of 21 kilometers, with around 12,000 human runners and several humanoid robots. The top three finishers in both the human and robot categories will win prizes.
According to the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area (E-Town), more than 20 companies have worked together to build the robots for the race. The robots must look like humans and be able to walk or run on two legs. They cannot use wheels.
The robots will be between 0.5 meters and 2 meters tall. Their legs must be long enough for the robot to walk. Both remote-controlled and fully autonomous robots can join the race. If needed, the robot operators can change the batteries during the race.
One of the robots in the race is called "Tiangong." It is built by China’s Embodied Artificial Intelligence Robotics Innovation Center and can run at 10 kilometers per hour. Tiangong gained attention last year when it joined the Yizhuang Half Marathon in Beijing. However, this time, Tiangong will participate in the entire race, not just the start and finish.
This marathon is a part of China’s efforts to improve and develop robots. China is facing problems like an older population and fewer people working. To help with this, China is investing in robots. The Chinese government sees humanoid robots as important for the country's growth and future.
In 2023, China installed more than half of the world’s robots. This shows how much China is focusing on technology. The country is also planning another event in August, where humanoid robots will compete in different sports, such as running and football.
This marathon will show off China’s progress in robotics and technology. It is an exciting moment in the world of robots and sports, and it will be a huge step forward for the future.
