Enzo Fernandez has been ruled out of Chelsea FC’s next two matches after controversial remarks about his future triggered internal disciplinary action.
The 25-year-old midfielder, who has been linked with a potential move to Real Madrid, recently stated in a podcast that he would like to live in Madrid. His comments intensified speculation about a possible departure from Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea’s head coach Liam Rosenior confirmed that Fernandez will miss the FA Cup quarter-final against Port Vale, as well as the upcoming Premier League clash with Manchester City.
Rosenior described the midfielder’s remarks as a breach of club values, stating that “a line was crossed” in terms of Chelsea’s culture and expectations. He emphasized that the decision to sanction Fernandez was taken collectively by the management, ownership, and players.
Despite the suspension, Rosenior maintained respect for Fernandez, acknowledging his importance to the squad and his desire for the team’s success. However, he stressed that maintaining discipline and unity within the club remains a priority.
The controversy follows Fernandez’s earlier comments after Chelsea’s UEFA Champions League exit against Paris Saint-Germain, where he admitted uncertainty about his future at the club.
Since joining Chelsea in 2023 for a then British-record fee of £107 million, Fernandez has grown into a key figure and was appointed vice-captain the following year. His recent remarks, however, have raised fresh concerns about stability within the squad.
Meanwhile, defender Marc Cucurella also hinted at internal challenges, pointing to instability and questioning the club’s recruitment strategy.
Chelsea have clarified that the disciplinary action is temporary, and the door remains open for Fernandez’s reintegration, provided he aligns with the club’s values moving forward.
