Washington, DC: TRENDS Research & Advisory’s United States office recently hosted its third strategic session, “Unmanned Surface Vessels: The Future of Maritime Security,” bringing together former military leaders and maritime technology experts to discuss the evolving landscape of global naval defense.
Panelists emphasized that modern maritime strength is no longer measured merely by fleet size. Instead, speed, operational flexibility, and innovative deployment capabilities have become the defining factors. Unmanned surface and underwater vehicles (USVs and AUVs) are emerging as pivotal tools in securing critical sea lanes and addressing new-age threats.
Moderated by Bilal Y. Saab, Senior Managing Director of TRENDS America, the session explored how unmanned systems are reshaping maritime security in the Gulf and beyond. Experts discussed their potential to enhance deterrence, streamline operations, and integrate artificial intelligence for real-time monitoring and defense coordination.

International collaboration was highlighted as a crucial component in accelerating the development and deployment of these technologies. Joint testing, AI integration, and trust-building between human operators and autonomous systems were identified as essential steps for effective maritime operations.
The discussion concluded with recommendations urging governments and private stakeholders to invest more heavily in maritime innovation, foster cross-border partnerships, and adopt flexible funding models to speed up the integration of unmanned technologies into global naval frameworks.
The session reinforced the notion that the future of maritime security lies in smart, collaborative, and technology-driven approaches, marking a strategic shift from traditional naval paradigms to a more dynamic, responsive, and unmanned maritime ecosystem.
