Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) has arrested former Energy Minister German Galushchenko while he was allegedly attempting to leave the country. The arrest is linked to a major corruption investigation that shook Ukraine’s energy sector last year.
In an official statement, NABU said its detectives detained the former minister while he was crossing the state border. The arrest is part of the high-profile “Midas” case, a large-scale corruption scandal involving alleged money laundering and illegal financial activities in the energy sector.
Although NABU did not directly name German Galushchenko in its initial statement, he served as Ukraine’s Energy Minister and resigned in November 2025 amid growing controversy. Authorities confirmed that investigative procedures are ongoing and further details will be released after legal formalities are completed.
According to investigators, the corruption scheme involved a $100 million kickback operation designed to siphon off public funds. Officials believe the operation was organised by individuals linked to influential political figures. Reports suggest that Galushchenko may have received personal benefits connected to the scheme.
The scandal caused widespread public anger, especially as Ukraine continues to face severe power shortages due to ongoing Russian attacks on infrastructure. The revelations further intensified concerns about transparency and accountability in the country’s energy system.
Ukraine has long struggled with corruption issues, and tackling graft remains a key condition for its efforts to join the European Union. The arrest of a former senior minister marks a significant development in the country’s anti-corruption drive. Further updates are expected as the investigation continues.
