The Babuyan Islands brace for unprecedented danger as Super Typhoon Nando nears, bringing life-threatening winds, torrential rains, and a storm surge that could exceed three meters. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has issued the highest alert, Wind Signal No. 5, across the entire island group.
According to the latest 11 a.m. bulletin, the typhoon’s eye is located about 110 kilometers east of Calayan, Cagayan, moving westward at 20 kilometers per hour. Nando packs maximum sustained winds of 215 kph, with gusts up to 265 kph. Its powerful winds extend up to 600 kilometers from the center, affecting a vast area.

Several regions in Northern Luzon are also on high alert. Signal No. 4 warnings cover southern Batanes towns including Basco, Mahatao, Ivana, Uyugan, and Sabtang, as well as northern Cagayan (Santa Ana, Claveria, Aparri) and northern Ilocos Norte (Pagudpud, Burgos, Bangui). Signal No. 3 is in effect for central Cagayan, rest of Batanes, and northern and central Apayao, while Signal No. 2 and No. 1 cover other surrounding provinces, including Abra, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Ifugao, and parts of La Union, Pangasinan, and Bulacan.
Authorities are warning residents to prepare for violent winds, heavy rainfall, and potentially devastating storm surges. Evacuation and precautionary measures have been strongly recommended in high-risk areas.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has assured that the government is closely monitoring the storm and coordinating with local authorities to ensure the safety of affected communities. PAGASA forecasts that Super Typhoon Nando is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Tuesday morning.
