In a historic milestone for space exploration, NASA has released the first images captured by the Artemis II crew as they journey toward the Moon. The photographs, downlinked nearly one-and-a-half days after launch, offer breathtaking views of Earth from deep space.
The first image, taken by mission commander Reid Wiseman, shows a curved portion of Earth visible through the Orion capsule’s window. Another striking photo captures the entire planet, with vast blue oceans covered by swirling white cloud formations. NASA officials also confirmed the presence of a glowing green aurora visible from space, adding to the visual spectacle.
NASA exploration systems leader Lakiesha Hawkins highlighted the emotional impact of the images, stating that apart from the four astronauts onboard, every human on Earth is represented in that single frame. She also confirmed that the mission is progressing smoothly.
As of Friday afternoon, the Artemis II crew — comprising three American astronauts and one Canadian — had traveled over 110,000 miles (180,000 kilometers) from Earth. The spacecraft continues its trajectory toward the Moon, with approximately 150,000 miles (240,000 kilometers) remaining. The crew is expected to reach lunar proximity by Monday.
The mission involves a flyby of the Moon, where the Orion capsule will loop around before beginning its return journey to Earth without landing. Earlier in the mission, the spacecraft successfully executed a critical engine burn to set its course toward the Moon.
Following a repositioning maneuver by Mission Control, the astronauts were treated to a full view of Earth, complete with visible northern lights. Describing the moment, Wiseman said it was so breathtaking that it left the entire crew momentarily speechless.
Artemis II marks the first time humans have traveled toward the Moon since NASA’s Apollo 17 mission in 1972, signaling a new era in lunar exploration.
