Kabul: A powerful earthquake in Afghanistan turned deadly on Friday after a residential house collapsed in the capital city, Kabul, killing at least eight people and injuring a child, officials confirmed.
According to the National Disaster Management Authority, the tragic incident occurred shortly after strong tremors shook the region, causing structural damage to buildings.
The earthquake, measuring 5.9 magnitude, struck the Hindu Kush region, as reported by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). The quake originated at a depth of approximately 177 kilometers, making its impact widely felt across neighboring regions.
Witnesses reported that the tremors extended beyond Afghanistan, with noticeable shaking in Islamabad (Pakistan) and New Delhi (India).
Afghanistan, known for its mountainous terrain, is highly vulnerable to natural disasters, particularly earthquakes. On average, seismic activity claims around 560 lives annually in the country.
In a similar recent incident, a 6.3 magnitude earthquake in November resulted in at least 27 fatalities and caused widespread destruction, leaving hundreds of homes damaged.
Authorities are continuing rescue and assessment operations in the affected areas, while concerns remain over the structural safety of buildings in quake-prone zones.
