A representative from Jakarta has urged the government to implement a ban on individuals holding Israeli passports in response to a lethal incident involving United Nations peacekeepers in Lebanon.
Lukmanul Hakim, who serves on Jakarta's regional legislative council, has called for decisive diplomatic measures following the deaths of three Indonesian soldiers who were part of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in southern Lebanon.
On March 29, an Israeli artillery strike reportedly hit a UNIFIL base, exacerbating regional tensions. This attack resulted in the deaths of three Indonesian peacekeepers and injuries to multiple others, prompting widespread condemnation and demands for accountability.
Hakim emphasized that Indonesia, as an independent nation, should take a firm stand by controlling entry for Israeli passport holders. He believes this approach would solidify Indonesia's commitment to international law and honor its fallen soldiers.
Historically, Indonesia has not engaged in formal diplomatic relations with Israel and has been a strong supporter of Palestinian statehood in global discussions. The recent attack has intensified the calls for a more assertive approach.
There are increasing calls for President Prabowo Subianto to act decisively, while the government is also focused on the repatriation of the deceased soldiers' bodies. It has been confirmed that the fallen will be honored posthumously, with compensation provided for their families.
The Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) is collaborating closely with UN officials to handle the situation and ensure medical care for the injured peacekeepers stationed in Lebanon.
This incident raises larger concerns regarding the safety of UN peacekeeping operations in conflict areas, particularly amidst ongoing clashes involving Israel and various armed factions.
As diplomatic strains grow, Indonesia is anticipated to carefully evaluate its possible reactions, balancing its international responsibilities with public sentiment and its consistent foreign policy principles.
