Long before zombies dominated pop culture, aliens ruled the world of cinema—shaping how people imagine extraterrestrial life. From classic Hollywood films to modern sci-fi blockbusters, the portrayal of aliens has significantly influenced public perception.
Now, that line between fiction and reality may soon blur.
In February, former U.S. President Donald Trump called for the release of classified government files related to UFOs and extraterrestrial encounters. The move has reignited global curiosity about whether intelligent life beyond Earth truly exists.
The announcement followed remarks by former President Barack Obama, who stated in a podcast that while there is no confirmed evidence of alien contact, the vastness of the universe makes the possibility of extraterrestrial life highly likely.
Experts believe that decades of science fiction storytelling have already prepared the public for such revelations. Priscilla Wald, a professor at Duke University who specializes in science fiction, explains that films have portrayed aliens in various ways—ranging from hostile invaders to peaceful beings seeking contact or offering warnings.
Hollywood has long drawn inspiration from real-world events, particularly the Roswell Incident, where mysterious debris found in New Mexico initially fueled speculation about a crashed flying saucer before being officially labeled as a weather balloon.
This event sparked a wave of alien-themed films in the 1950s, including classics like The Day the Earth Stood Still, which portrayed extraterrestrials as messengers warning humanity about the dangers of nuclear conflict. On the other hand, films like Predator and Signs depicted aliens as dangerous threats.
Renowned filmmaker Steven Spielberg further shaped public imagination with iconic movies such as E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. His upcoming project, “Disclosure Day,” explores how humanity might react if proof of alien life were finally revealed.
Former U.S. Navy Rear Admiral Timothy Gallaudet believes that society is psychologically prepared for such disclosures. However, he notes that public reaction would largely depend on the nature of the information released.
While some people may welcome extraterrestrial contact, others could react with fear and uncertainty. According to Wald, this fear often reflects human nature itself—our own history of conflict and domination projected onto imagined alien civilizations.
With the potential release of UFO data, the world stands at a crossroads between speculation and reality. Whether aliens are friendly visitors, distant observers, or simply a product of imagination, one thing is certain—the conversation is far from over.
