Stephen Curry gave a stunning performance by scoring 46 points to lead the Golden State Warriors to a 125-120 victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday. The thrilling game was played in San Antonio, and it was the first of two meetings between the teams in three days. The two sides will face each other again on Friday in an NBA Cup match.
The Spurs started the game very strongly. They led by as many as 16 points during the first half and were ahead by seven points at halftime. However, Golden State came alive in the third quarter, with Curry showing his brilliance and taking full control of the game. He scored 22 points in that single quarter, almost half of the Warriors’ total of 43 points in that period. His shooting accuracy and energy helped the Warriors completely turn the match around.
By the end of the third quarter, Golden State had taken a strong 92-84 lead. From that point on, the Warriors never allowed the Spurs to take back control. The Spurs tried to close the gap in the fourth quarter when De’Aaron Fox made a layup to bring them within one point with just over 10 minutes left to play. However, the Warriors responded quickly and pushed their lead back up, mainly through the teamwork of Curry and Jimmy Butler III. The pair combined for 18 points in the final quarter to ensure the win for Golden State.
Jimmy Butler III played a key supporting role, finishing the game with 28 points. Moses Moody also added 19 points, showing strong consistency on both ends of the floor. This victory marked Golden State’s second win in their past three games, bringing back some positive momentum to the team after a mixed start to the season.
For the Spurs, Victor Wembanyama was the standout performer. The talented young player recorded a triple-double, scoring 31 points, grabbing 15 rebounds, and handing out 10 assists. Despite his efforts, his team could not hold off the Warriors’ comeback. Stephon Castle also impressed with 23 points and 10 assists, while Devin Vassell scored 15 points. De’Aaron Fox had 13, Luke Kornet contributed 12, and Harrison Barnes added 11 points. Even with their balanced scoring, the Spurs could not maintain their early lead and saw their three-game winning streak come to an end.
In the opening quarter, the Spurs looked confident and energetic. They built an eight-point lead just seven minutes into the game when Castle tipped in a layup. They continued their strong performance with a 3-pointer by Julian Champagnie at the end of the first quarter, giving them a commanding 28-14 lead. Their dominance continued in the second quarter, when Wembanyama hit a 3-pointer to stretch the lead to 33-17 with 10 minutes remaining before halftime.
Golden State slowly fought back into the game. Curry’s three-point play helped reduce the gap to eight points midway through the second quarter. However, the Spurs responded immediately as Castle made a powerful dunk, extending San Antonio’s lead to 56-40 with just over three minutes left in the first half.
The turning point came right before halftime when the Warriors went on a 9-0 scoring run, including five points from Curry. This strong finish helped them reduce the deficit to just seven points, with the score at 56-49 by halftime. At this point, Curry had already scored 15 points, while Moody and Butler had added 14 and 10 points respectively. For the Spurs, Castle led with 14 points and Wembanyama followed closely with 13 by the break.
In the second half, Curry continued his dominant display. His shooting from long range and his ability to create plays lifted the entire team. The Warriors’ defense also improved, forcing turnovers and limiting the Spurs’ scoring chances. The momentum stayed with Golden State throughout the rest of the game, and even though the Spurs made late efforts, they could not recover from the third-quarter surge.
With this victory, the Warriors improved their standing in the Western Conference and showed that they can still perform at a high level when Curry is at his best. The Spurs, meanwhile, will look to make adjustments before their rematch on Friday.
