Starting in 2025, many new laws will begin in different parts of the United States. These laws cover important topics like technology, abortion, guns, wages, and marijuana. Most of these rules were made this year by lawmakers or voted on by people, but some are being challenged in court.
In California, new rules aim to protect actors and performers. They stop companies from using digital versions of people without asking for permission. Even families of actors who have passed away can now take action if their image is used without approval. Parents who earn money from videos or posts featuring their kids must save some of the money for the children. If they don’t, the children can sue them.

Several states are changing rules about social media. In Florida, children under 14 won’t be allowed to have social media accounts, and kids aged 14 and 15 will need their parents’ permission. But this rule is on hold because of a legal fight. Tennessee also wants parents to approve accounts for their kids. Another law will require websites for adults to confirm users are at least 18 years old, but this too is being questioned in court.
California is working to stop fake political videos and images made using computers. It’s now easier to remove these fake materials online, and people can sue if fake political ads harm them. The state is also protecting students by banning schools from forcing staff to tell parents if their kids change their gender identity.
Delaware made a new rule about abortion. It says state health plans and Medicaid must cover abortion costs completely, with no extra fees for people using the service.
Minnesota has created a rule to ban certain gun parts that make weapons fire faster. Delaware added colleges to the list of places where guns aren’t allowed, except for police officers and guards.
In Kentucky, people can now use marijuana for health reasons. To get approval, they need a doctor’s note saying they have a condition like chronic pain, cancer, or PTSD.
More than 20 states will raise the minimum pay for workers in January 2025. California, Washington, and Connecticut will have the highest minimum wages, above $16 an hour. Delaware and Nebraska will also see big pay increases.
In Arizona, renters will no longer have to pay taxes on their monthly rent. This helps renters save money, but it means less income for local governments. Kansas will stop charging sales tax on groceries and will lower income taxes for families and seniors.
Oklahoma is giving voting rights to people who were convicted of crimes but have finished their punishment or had their crimes changed from serious to less serious ones. This is to help these people feel included and let them participate in society again.
