NEW DELHI: A two-story house in New York City collapsed on Wednesday afternoon, resulting in injuries to at least 11 individuals, as reported by officials. The incident occurred around 4 pm local time and prompted a flurry of 911 calls describing what witnesses likened to an explosion.
Fire Chief Michael Monds, speaking to the press via the Associated Press (AP), stated that firefighters arrived to find many of the victims already outside in the front yard. However, rescuers had to extricate at least one young person from a vehicle that was trapped under the rubble.
The cause of the collapse is currently under investigation by both police and fire authorities. Chief Monds noted that the house, constructed in 1920, will be thoroughly examined to determine the factors leading to its structural failure. Upon arrival at the scene, firefighters also encountered downed power lines and detected a strong odor of natural gas, adding complexity to the emergency response.

Emergency services transported the injured residents, including children and adults, to Upstate University Hospital. Among the injured, two individuals were reported to be in critical condition. By Tuesday evening, fire officials confirmed that all 13 residents initially believed to be inside the collapsed structure had been located and accounted for, according to AP.
The incident underscores the challenges faced by emergency responders in urban settings during structural failures, emphasizing the critical need for thorough investigations to prevent future occurrences and ensure public safety.
