Indian-origin Democrat Amish Shah has emerged as a leading candidate in Arizona’s first Congressional District race, gaining a slight edge over incumbent Republican Representative David Schweikert. Shah has secured 50.9% of the vote compared to Schweikert’s 49.1%. The district, which covers much of Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, and Fountain Hills, has traditionally been a Republican stronghold but is now seen as one of Arizona’s most competitive districts due to nearly one-third of its electorate identifying as Independent.

Shah, an experienced emergency room physician with 20 years of practice, previously served in the Arizona House of Representatives, having been elected in 2017. He is running on a platform focused on healthcare reform, advocating for lower healthcare costs, and challenging pharmaceutical companies over high drug prices, such as insulin. Shah is also vocal on issues such as women's reproductive rights, promising to work towards safeguarding women’s freedom to make their own medical decisions.
His campaign emphasizes his belief that politicians should not interfere in personal medical choices and aims to push for higher wages for teachers and broader healthcare reforms. Shah’s candidacy has gained significant attention due to his deep ties to the community and his professional background in healthcare, with many seeing him as a strong advocate for Arizona families.
As the election progresses, Shah's margin over Schweikert in this traditionally conservative district signals a shift in local political dynamics, potentially reshaping the political landscape of Arizona’s first Congressional District.
Meanwhile, on the national front, Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump continues to lead in electoral votes, with the ongoing tally in other key races shaping the overall election outcome.
