Dubai, UAE – 10 April 2025: The Middle East is playing an increasingly pivotal role in shaping the future of Formula 1, according to Mohammed Ben Sulayem, President of the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA).
With back-to-back Formula 1 races set to take place in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia over the coming weekends, followed by events in Qatar and Abu Dhabi later this year, the region continues to cement its presence on the global motorsport calendar.
Ben Sulayem, who has served as FIA President since 2021, praised the unique contributions of each host country and underlined the strategic importance of the Arab world in the sport's global appeal.
“The Arab world plays a very important part in the championship’s calendar,” he said. “Each Grand Prix in the region has added its own character and charm to the sport.”
He highlighted that it has been 21 years since the Bahrain Grand Prix debuted, opening the door for neighbouring nations to invest in top-tier motorsport.
He noted that the region’s involvement has grown beyond hosting events. Today, it includes building fan engagement, promoting diversity, and supporting long-term development goals aligned with the FIA’s strategic mission.
Reflecting on his leadership at the FIA, Ben Sulayem said the last three years were marked by both growth and reform. More than 2,000 hours of consultations with FIA clubs helped shape his 2021 manifesto, which continues to guide the organisation’s trajectory.
“I remain committed to placing our members at the heart of the FIA and ensuring we stay on the right track,” he added.
The FIA celebrated its 120th anniversary last year under Ben Sulayem’s stewardship, marking significant milestones including major financial improvements. The Federation recorded a forecasted operational surplus of €2.2 million, recovering from a €24 million deficit in 2021.
He also pointed to advancements in education and safety within motorsport. Over 13,500 individual courses were completed via the FIA University, alongside 70 safety-focused research projects.
“By continuing to work together, we can ensure success for the next century,” Ben Sulayem said.
