LIV Golf is making a significant shift as it gears up for the 2026 season. Reports from Flushing It on X reveal that all new players signed to LIV Golf will be required to compete in at least two Asian Tour International Series events each year. This initiative is designed to deepen LIV’s commitment to the Asian Tour and broaden their international influence.
While the mandate may seem new, it aligns with the trend seen over the last few years. Major players like Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson, and Patrick Reed have already participated in these Asian Tour events since 2022. Previously optional, participation will now be a stipulation in the contracts of new LIV Golf members starting next year.
From 2026 onwards, new entrants to LIV Golf will have to engage in a minimum of 16 tournaments throughout the season—14 from the LIV calendar plus two from the Asian Tour International Series. This regulation ensures the competitiveness of the LIV circuit while significantly enhancing visibility for the Asian Tour.
This strategic move is part of LIV Golf’s ongoing efforts to globally expand its brand. Their slogan, “Golf but louder,” encapsulates their vision for making golf more entertaining and globally inclusive. By partnering with the Asian Tour, LIV seeks to captivate larger audiences in Asia and generate opportunities for emerging golf talents.
The Asian Tour International Series offers prize pools ranging from $1.5 million to $2 million per event and aims to elevate golf in Asia with about 10 major tournaments annually. This initiative has become central to LIV’s growth strategy beyond established markets in Europe and North America, potentially fostering new talents and giving current stars more pathways for ranking opportunities.
A key factor in this new rule could be the impending end of LIV’s indemnity policy, which is set to expire in 2025. This policy presently protects against fines from the DP World Tour for participation in LIV events. Following its conclusion, players might gravitate more towards the Asian Tour, which has close ties to LIV. Additionally, since LIV’s tournaments do not award Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points, the International Series serves as a vital route for players looking to maintain or enhance their standings.
LIV is also evolving its team-building strategies, utilizing advanced data analytics inspired by sports betting. This helps franchises identify players best suited for the unique LIV team structure. Six roster spots are open for the 2026 season, and many current players are anticipated to renew their contracts, albeit under stricter financial guidelines.
There are indications that the era of extravagant signing bonuses is drawing to a close. Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF), which backs LIV Golf, reportedly intends to scale back on huge signing deals. Previous agreements, like Jon Rahm’s $300 million contract in 2024, have generated global attention. Now, the emphasis is shifting towards maintaining competitive balance and fostering international expansion.
The next International Series event is scheduled to take place in the Philippines, with prominent players such as Dustin Johnson and Patrick Reed set to participate. Meanwhile, LIV Golf’s fifth season kicks off from February 5–7, 2026, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Jon Rahm is anticipated to return vigorously in pursuit of his third consecutive individual championship following a quieter year without major victories.
Reports suggest that Spanish golfer Sergio Garcia has completed his DP World Tour membership and is interested in participating in the 2027 Ryder Cup in Ireland. His remarks have fired up discussions about whether LIV players could eventually reintegrate into traditional global competitions like the Ryder Cup.
This new policy from LIV Golf emphasizes its goal of balancing competitiveness with commercial growth and expanding its international presence. By making Asian Tour participation compulsory, LIV not only contributes to the development of golf in Asia but also fortifies its global footprint. While this shift may impact players’ routines and travel plans, it poses a potential for the sport to flourish beyond its established confines.
