Liverpool's Premier League woes persist as they faced Sunderland at Anfield on Wednesday, ending in a 1-1 stalemate. After a morale-boosting win against West Ham United, the Merseyside team hoped to capitalize on their form, but questions regarding their steady performance again surfaced.
Sunderland struck first in the 67th minute, with Chemsdine Talbi taking advantage of a rare slip from captain Virgil van Dijk. A shot from Talbi deflected off Van Dijk into the net, leaving Alisson no chance to intervene. Sunderland appeared the more dominant force throughout much of the match, nearly achieving their first win at Anfield since 1983.
The home side equalized in the 81st minute when newcomer Florian Wirtz skillfully maneuvered past two defenders, his shot deflecting off teammate Nordi Mukiele into the net. Despite being recorded as an own goal, it secured a vital point for Liverpool just as defeat seemed imminent.
Sunderland had a chance to snatch victory in added time when Wilson Isidor skillfully eluded defenders and rounded Alisson, only for Federico Chiesa to execute a brilliant goal-line clearance. This tense finish highlighted the defensive vulnerabilities of Liverpool and Sunderland's determination in the latter half of the match.
Manager Arne Slot chose to bench star player Mohamed Salah for the second consecutive match due to his recent dip in form. Salah brought energy upon his second-half introduction, but Liverpool struggled to dominate in the first half, allowing Sunderland to seize control.
Liverpool had potential opportunities to secure three points, with Florian Wirtz almost scoring from an early goalkeeping blunder by Robin Roefs and Dominik Szoboszlai’s drive being pushed away just before halftime. Meanwhile, Sunderland also posed a threat when Trai Hume tested Alisson with a challenging long-range shot.
Despite equalizing late on, Liverpool's problems linger. They have not won any Premier League match after conceding first since April's victory over Tottenham. Slot acknowledged the unluckiness of the deflected equalizer and the difficulties faced against a resolute Sunderland side.
Sunderland's manager Regis Le Bris hailed his team’s performance, commending their resilience. “Playing at Anfield is a privilege, and our players exhibited remarkable character,” he stated. “We remained focused and earned a well-deserved point.”
Currently, Liverpool sits eighth in the Premier League with 22 points, trailing league leaders Arsenal by 11 points while grappling with ongoing inconsistency. In contrast, Sunderland, now sixth with 23 points, will look to build on this impressive display at one of football’s most iconic venues.
This encounter emphasizes Liverpool’s struggles this season as they aim for consistency and a serious challenge for the Premier League title while managing injuries and form issues among key players.
