Los Angeles has reached an important milestone as the city prepares to host its first-ever Paralympic Games in 2028. With exactly 1,000 days remaining, the organisers announced the first version of the competition schedule. They also confirmed that the 2028 Paralympics will include more sports, more sessions, and more medal events than any previous Paralympic Games.
The LA28 organising committee explained that the event will feature 23 sports, 560 medal events, and 294 competition sessions. These details were developed by working closely with international sports federations and Olympic Broadcasting Services. The goal was to create a schedule that supports athlete wellbeing, while also ensuring that people around the world can easily watch the events on television and online.
According to Ileana Rodriguez, the LA28 vice president for Paralympic strategy and relations, the organising team focused heavily on designing a schedule centred on athletes’ needs. She said that hosting the first Paralympic Games in Los Angeles is very meaningful, and the organisers want the event to be memorable for competitors and spectators alike. The schedule was created to ensure smooth competitions, fair timings, and an exciting viewing experience for fans around the world.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass also expressed her excitement. She announced that the 2028 Paralympics will feature a record number of women athletes. This is an important step toward gender equality in global sports. The city aims to provide a welcoming and inspiring environment for athletes from every part of the world.
The opening ceremony for the 2028 Paralympic Games will take place on August 15 at SoFi Stadium, which is known for hosting major sporting and entertainment events. After twelve days of competition, the games will close on August 27 at the historic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. This venue also hosted events during the 1932 and 1984 Olympic Games, giving the 2028 Paralympics a strong connection to the city’s sporting history.
The very first Paralympic champions of the Los Angeles Games will be crowned on Day 1. Events that will award medals on the opening day include:
Para athletics
Wheelchair fencing
Shooting Para sport
Para equestrian
Para track cycling
These events will showcase the strength, skill, and determination of the participating athletes right from the start.
One of the most exciting announcements is the introduction of Para climbing. This sport will appear in the Paralympic programme for the first time in 2028. The competitions will take place across four days, beginning on Day 9. Para climbing is expected to attract strong interest from both athletes and fans due to its fast-growing popularity.
Two popular team sports—wheelchair rugby and sitting volleyball—will use extended formats in 2028. These will include play-in rounds, giving more teams the chance to compete and gain experience. The organisers believe this format will make the tournaments more competitive and enjoyable for fans.
While the initial schedule is now available, the organisers have confirmed that a full event-by-event schedule will be released in 2026. This future update will include exact timings and detailed plans for every sport.
With 1,000 days left until the opening ceremony, the excitement in Los Angeles continues to build. The 2028 Paralympic Games aim to set new standards in inclusivity, participation, and global engagement. The city hopes to deliver an unforgettable celebration of athletic excellence and human spirit.
