Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase has been handed a one-game suspension after spitting on an opponent, the NFL confirmed on Tuesday. This comes after Chase’s appeal of the punishment was rejected by a hearing officer, Jordy Nelson, jointly selected by the league and the players union.
The suspension stems from an incident during a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, which Pittsburgh won 34-12. Chase was involved in an altercation with Steelers defensive back Jalen Ramsey in the fourth quarter. During the exchange, Ramsey punched Chase and was ejected from the game. Initially, Chase was not penalized, but video later surfaced showing him spitting at Ramsey, leading the NFL to review the incident.
Chase appealed the suspension, hoping to avoid missing a game, but the appeal was denied. The hearing officer upheld the one-game suspension, marking a significant disciplinary action. According to reports, Chase becomes the first player in NFL history to be suspended for spitting. Previously, players involved in spitting incidents had only received fines.
Chase will miss the Bengals’ upcoming game against the New England Patriots on Sunday. Cincinnati currently holds a 3-7 record, while the Patriots sit at 9-2. His absence could impact the team’s offensive performance, as Chase is a key part of the Bengals’ passing attack.
The 25-year-old receiver is having another strong season despite the suspension. He leads the NFL with 79 receptions this year and has accumulated 861 receiving yards and five touchdowns. In the recent game against Pittsburgh, he caught three passes for 30 yards.
In 2024, Chase had a record-breaking season, leading the NFL in all major receiving categories with 127 catches, 1,708 receiving yards, and 17 receiving touchdowns. He has also been named to the Pro Bowl in each of his four previous NFL seasons.
Since entering the league with Cincinnati, Chase has played 72 games, starting 71 of them. He has amassed 474 receptions, 6,286 receiving yards, and 51 touchdowns. Chase is widely regarded as one of the top receivers in the NFL, and his suspension is a rare disciplinary measure for such a high-profile player.
The NFL’s decision to suspend Ja’Marr Chase underscores the league’s stance on unsportsmanlike conduct. While spitting has previously resulted in fines, this marks the first suspension for such behavior. The Bengals will have to adjust their strategy for the game against New England without their star receiver. Fans and analysts alike are watching closely to see how the team performs in his absence.
