New Zealand defeated the West Indies by five wickets in the second ODI at Napier to secure a 2-0 lead in the three-match series. The match was reduced to 34 overs per side due to rain, but the Black Caps chased down 248 runs with three balls to spare, thanks to a brilliant opening partnership between Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra.
Chasing 248, New Zealand got off to a flying start. Conway and Ravindra played attacking innings, putting on 106 runs for the first wicket. Their aggressive batting early in the innings broke the backbone of the West Indies’ bowling attack and set a strong foundation for the chase. Conway scored 90 runs while Ravindra contributed 56, both striking at a good pace to keep New Zealand in control.
The West Indies had earlier struggled after being asked to bat first. Their top order collapsed under pressure from New Zealand bowlers. Kyle Jamieson led the attack, taking three important wickets for 44 runs, including dismissing John Campbell and Keacy Carty early on. At 86 for five in just 15.3 overs, the Windies were in a difficult position.
Despite the early losses, Shai Hope stood out for the West Indies. He scored a counterattacking century, his 19th in ODIs, hitting 13 fours and four sixes. His innings, along with support from Justin Greaves and Romario Shepherd, helped the Windies reach a total of 247 runs for nine wickets.
During New Zealand’s innings, the chase faced a brief wobble. After Ravindra was dismissed in the 17th over, Will Young and Mark Chapman were out in quick succession, and Conway departed in the 26th over with New Zealand at 4-166. At this stage, the required run rate was climbing, making the match tense for the home side.
Tom Latham (39 not out off 29 balls) and captain Mitchell Santner (34 not out off 15 balls) provided stability at the end. They kept the pressure off the team and managed to score the remaining runs with calculated shots. In a dramatic finish, New Zealand needed seven runs from the last five balls. Jayden Seales bowled a no-ball, which allowed Latham to hit four. Santner then sealed the victory with a cover drive, giving New Zealand a thrilling win.
After the match, Shai Hope, despite being on the losing side, praised his team. He said, “The way we've been pushing the game to the back end, pretty much finishing in the last over, it's only a matter of time before we cross the line. We have to find a way to cross the line. To be a great team you have to keep winning against the best.”
With this win, New Zealand secured the series with one match still remaining. The two teams will face off in the third ODI on Saturday, followed by a three-Test series beginning December 2. New Zealand’s strong performance in Napier highlighted the importance of partnerships and resilience in chasing competitive totals, while the West Indies will look to recover in the final match to avoid a series whitewash.
