Get ready for an intense viewing experience as Selvamani Selvaraj’s retro thriller, Kaantha, featuring stars like Dulquer Salmaan and Bhagyashri, is set to hit Netflix shortly after its big screen debut on November 14. Starting December 12, audiences can enjoy the film in languages such as Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, and Malayalam, while it will be known as Shaantha in Kannada. According to Netflix, the film is described as “A masterpiece, a mentor, and a murder. When pride turns into revenge, who will break first?”
Set in the vibrant backdrop of 1950s Madras, Kaantha is a gripping period mystery directed by Selvamani Selvaraj and co-written by Thamizh Prabha. Produced by Dulquer Salmaan and Rana Daggubati under the banners of Spirit Media and Wayfarer Films, the film explores the rivalry between superstar TKM, played by Dulquer Salmaan, and his former mentor Ayya, portrayed by Samuthirakani, which escalates after a mysterious death on set. Bhagyashri Borse stars as Kumari, a young actress navigating the intricate film industry, while Rana Daggubati takes on the role of Inspector Phoenix, who investigates the plot's unfolding chaos.
The film proved successful at the box office, raking in ₹35.36 crore globally. Despite receiving mixed reviews, critics particularly lauded Dulquer Salmaan's compelling performance, noting his ability to stand out in a film that had its storytelling flaws. Fans are buzzing on social media and eagerly anticipating the film's OTT release to either relive their favorite moments or witness Bhagyashri Borse's exceptional acting.
In line with industry trends, Kaantha will be available for streaming about three to four weeks post its theatrical release, offering fans a speedy opportunity to watch it online. Netflix’s release in multiple languages, including the Kannada version Shaantha, aims to reach a broader audience.
Combining elements of mystery, historical drama, and psychological intrigue, Kaantha delves into themes of ambition, ego, and revenge woven within the cutthroat world of the film industry. With its captivating plot set in the glamorous yet gritty backdrop of 1950s Madras, it promises to be a thrilling watch for genre enthusiasts.
