Israel carried out multiple airstrikes across the Gaza Strip on Sunday, killing at least 11 Palestinians, Palestinian officials reported. The strikes, described by the Israeli military as a response to ceasefire violations by Hamas, targeted both militants and structures used by displaced families.
Medics said an airstrike hit a tent encampment housing displaced Palestinians, killing four, while five others were killed in Khan Younis in southern Gaza. Another Palestinian was shot dead in the north. In Gaza City, airstrikes targeted what Israel identified as a commander of the Islamic Jihad group, an ally of Hamas.
Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem condemned the attacks, calling them a new “massacre” and a serious breach of the ceasefire agreement just days before the first meeting of U.S. President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace.
An Israeli military official defended the operations as “precise” and in line with international law, stating that Hamas had repeatedly violated the October ceasefire. Both sides continue to blame each other for violations of the agreement, which is central to Trump’s plan to end the Gaza war.
The conflict escalated following the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, which killed over 1,200 people in southern Israel. Since then, Israeli operations in Gaza have claimed more than 72,000 Palestinian lives according to Gaza health authorities, while Israeli military sources report four soldiers killed by militants in the same period.
Israel also reported continued efforts to destroy tunnels used by militants along the “Yellow Line,” the ceasefire demarcation separating Israeli- and Hamas-controlled areas. The Israeli army stated that militants crossing this line armed constitutes a direct ceasefire violation.
The Board of Peace meeting in Washington this Thursday is expected to address reconstruction and stabilization plans for Gaza, including a U.N.-authorized force. Hamas officials urged international participants to pressure Israel to adhere to the truce and prevent further civilian casualties.
