In an early Tuesday launch, Russia successfully sent a Soyuz rocket into orbit from the Vostochny Cosmodrome, carrying two satellites designed for monitoring space weather, along with a total of 53 small satellites. Among these were two Iranian satellites, underscoring ongoing cooperation in space between the nations.
The primary payload included two Ionosfera-M satellites, which are set to enhance the existing space system for monitoring Earth's ionosphere—a critical layer of the atmosphere that extends approximately 50 to 400 miles (80 to 644 kilometers) above the planet's surface. The Ionosfera-M satellites, each weighing 430 kilograms (948 pounds), will operate at an altitude of 820 kilometers (510 miles). When fully deployed, the system will consist of four Ionosfera-M satellites, with the remaining two scheduled for launch in 2025.

In addition to the Ionosfera-M satellites, the mission featured Iranian technology, including the Kowsar satellite, which is designed for high-resolution imaging, and the Hodhod satellite, intended for communications purposes. Also included in the launch was the Druzhba ATURK, the first student satellite developed collaboratively by Russian and Chinese students.
This launch follows a previous mission in February, during which Russia deployed an Iranian research satellite aimed at scanning the country's topography from space, highlighting the growing partnership in satellite technology and space exploration between Iran and Russia.
The advancements in satellite technology not only bolster national security and intelligence capabilities but also enhance scientific research and data collection related to Earth's atmospheric conditions. The Ionosfera-M satellites will specifically contribute to understanding and monitoring the ionosphere's behavior, which is crucial for telecommunications and navigation systems on Earth.
