Long before the blockbuster horror films of The Conjuring franchise captured the imagination of moviegoers worldwide, the real-life stories of Ed and Lorraine Warren, the famous demonologist couple, were already stirring debate and controversy. In a 2008 article in the Wilkes-Barre Times Leader, the Warrens were questioned and scrutinized for their role in one of Pennsylvania’s most famous paranormal cases—the alleged haunting of the Smurl family. This case became central to the final installment of the mainline Conjuring films, The Conjuring: Last Rites, but the reality behind the story was far more complex than the Hollywood portrayal.

Who Were Ed and Lorraine Warren?

Ed and Lorraine Warren were a married couple who dedicated their lives to investigating paranormal activities. They founded the New England Society for Psychic Research and claimed to have assisted in over 10,000 cases involving ghosts, demons, and supernatural occurrences. Ed Warren, self-taught in demonology, and Lorraine Warren, a clairvoyant, built reputations as experts in the paranormal world. Their cases were often sensational, attracting media attention, but they were also met with skepticism from scientific and psychological communities.

The Smurl Family Case

The Smurl family case began in West Pittston, Pennsylvania, in 1986. Jack and Janet Smurl, along with their four daughters and Jack’s parents, moved into a home on Chase Street. Soon after, the family claimed that strange and terrifying events started occurring in their house. They reported hearing blood-curdling screams, smelling foul odors, and experiencing violent disturbances. Jack Smurl and one of his daughters allegedly were thrown around the house, and even their pet German shepherd was affected. The most sensational claim was that Jack was attacked and sexually assaulted by a demon.

The case quickly attracted media attention, drawing national reporters to cover the story. The Warrens arrived from Connecticut and announced that the house was inhabited by four spirits and a powerful demon. Their involvement added credibility for some, but also raised eyebrows among skeptics.

Skepticism and Scientific Views

Despite the dramatic nature of the Smurl case, many questioned the Warrens’ credibility. Paul Kurtz, a philosophy professor from Buffalo State and chair of the Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal in the 1980s, suggested that Jack Smurl’s previous health problems could explain some of the alleged supernatural events. In 1983, Jack had surgery to remove fluid from his brain and had suffered meningitis in his late twenties, both of which might have contributed to memory issues or hallucinations. Kurtz described the haunting as a "hoax, a charade, a ghost story," and criticized the Warrens for lacking formal scientific or parapsychological credentials.

Hollywood Adaptation: The Conjuring: Last Rites

Fast forward to 2025, and the story of the Smurls reached a global audience through the film The Conjuring: Last Rites, directed by Michael Chaves. This movie is part of the larger Conjuring franchise, which includes four main films and multiple spin-offs like Annabelle and The Nun. The franchise has earned a staggering $2.4 billion at the box office on a combined budget of $263 million, making it the highest-grossing horror franchise ever.

The films portray Ed and Lorraine Warren as heroes uncovering dark supernatural forces while showing the real-life struggles of families like the Smurls. Lead actors Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga have been praised for their performances as the Warrens, bringing authenticity and emotional depth to the characters. However, Hollywood adaptations take creative liberties, adding fictional characters, dramatic events, and supernatural elements that did not exist in reality.

Differences Between Reality and Film

In the movie, the Smurl family is tormented by multiple spirits, including a demonic mirror that plays a central role in the plot. Lorraine Warren’s psychic visions uncover that the spirits are masking the presence of a powerful demon. The film shows Judy Warren, the couple’s daughter, being nearly killed by the mirror and becoming a key player in defeating the demon.

In real life, however, the Smurl case did not involve such fantastical elements. Judy Warren was sent to live with her grandparents while her parents worked on the case. The family endured significant stress from media attention, but there was no dramatic exorcism or supernatural showdown. The Smurls eventually asked reporters to leave their home, frustrated with the ongoing attention, and returned to the public spotlight later that year with the publication of the paperback book The Haunting.

Some events in the film, such as Dawn Smurl vomiting shards of glass and blood, were exaggerated for cinematic effect. Interviews with the real Smurl daughters revealed that one sister would experience vomiting episodes when the Warrens visited, but these occurrences were far less dramatic than the film depicts.

Ed and Lorraine Warren: Legacy and Controversy

The Warrens’ work continues to be both celebrated and criticized. While Hollywood has immortalized them as heroes of the paranormal, skeptics remain unconvinced of their methods and claims. Despite controversy, Judy Warren and her husband, Tony Spera, now run the New England Society for Psychic Research, carrying on the family legacy.

The Smurl case, in particular, remains one of the most famous examples of the Warrens’ work, illustrating the divide between media portrayal, public fascination, and scientific skepticism.

The story of the Smurl family and the Warrens’ involvement is a mix of real-life events and Hollywood dramatization. The films in The Conjuring franchise bring thrilling and terrifying experiences to audiences, but they also simplify, exaggerate, and fictionalize many aspects of the original cases. While Ed and Lorraine Warren’s methods and claims remain controversial, their influence on popular culture and the horror genre is undeniable.

For the Smurl family, the real haunting might have been less supernatural and more tied to mental health, media attention, and family stress. Yet, the story lives on in movies that thrill millions, showing how a local Pennsylvania case became a global sensation, blending fear, folklore, and cinema.
