Dubai has taken another step toward building the future of work and business with the launch of a unique program that combines innovation, flexibility, and sustainability. The Dubai Future Foundation, in partnership with Amazon UAE, has introduced a pilot project that will allow people to deliver Amazon packages on foot to customers in Dubai.
This new initiative is part of the Sandbox Dubai program, a platform approved by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defense, and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Dubai Future Foundation. Sandbox Dubai was created to support innovative economic models and help shape new laws and policies that can encourage fresh business ideas to grow safely.
The project does not just introduce a different way to deliver packages; it also opens up opportunities for people, reduces traffic on the roads, and supports Dubai’s long-term sustainability vision.
What is the Program About?
The program allows individuals and small business owners to work as gig workers by delivering Amazon packages on foot. Instead of driving cars or motorbikes, delivery partners will simply walk and carry packages directly to customers in their neighborhoods.
This system is especially useful in densely populated areas of Dubai, where walking is often faster and more convenient than driving. It also gives people the chance to earn extra income in their free time. For small businesses, this flexible model makes it easier to expand and manage deliveries without needing to invest heavily in vehicles.
Supporting Dubai’s Gig Economy Vision
This project is part of Dubai’s larger vision to strengthen the gig economy—a flexible system where individuals work part-time or freelance instead of traditional full-time jobs.
The gig economy is growing worldwide, and Dubai is working to be at the forefront of this change. With Sandbox Dubai, the city has built a safe and controlled space where new economic models can be tested. The goal is to make sure both workers and businesses can benefit while ensuring rules are clear and fair.
According to His Excellency Khalfan Belhoul, CEO of Dubai Future Foundation, this program reflects Dubai’s belief in public-private partnerships. By working together, the government and companies like Amazon can create new systems that serve society, boost competitiveness, and prepare Dubai for the future.
Reducing Traffic and Protecting the Environment
One of the most important benefits of this program is that it reduces the number of delivery vehicles on the road. With fewer vans and bikes, Dubai will face less traffic congestion, which is often a challenge in busy urban areas.
It also means lower carbon emissions, since on-foot deliveries do not require fuel. This step supports Dubai’s long-term sustainability goals, making the city greener and healthier for its people.
Voices from the Partnership
Ronaldo Mouchawar, Vice President of Amazon Middle East, Africa, and Turkey, explained the company’s excitement about this collaboration. He highlighted that Amazon’s mission is always to serve customers with speed, convenience, and reliability. By bringing global expertise to Dubai, Amazon hopes to create new ways of working that support entrepreneurship, gig workers, and overall economic growth.
He also emphasized that the partnership is an example of how government and private companies can work hand in hand to bring real change to people’s daily lives.
On the other hand, His Excellency Khalfan Belhoul confirmed that Dubai Future Foundation is committed to providing an environment where new ideas can be tested, developed, and turned into practical solutions. The collaboration with Amazon UAE is an important step in building systems that serve not only businesses but also society as a whole.
Sandbox Dubai and the D33 Agenda
The project comes under Sandbox Dubai, one of the key transformational projects included in the Dubai Economic Agenda (D33). The D33 plan aims to double Dubai’s economy within the next decade and make the city one of the world’s top three global economic hubs.
Sandbox Dubai is designed to provide innovators with a realistic environment where they can test their business ideas, products, and services. It allows them to work under flexible rules while still being supervised by regulators, ensuring safety and accountability.
This platform also provides valuable data to lawmakers, helping them create evidence-based policies that support sustainable and balanced growth.
Benefits for Individuals and Businesses
For individuals, this program means:
Flexible working hours and the chance to earn additional income.
A chance to make use of free time, turning idle hours into productive ones.
An opportunity to be part of a growing gig economy.
For businesses, the benefits include:
More efficient and cost-effective delivery models.
Access to a flexible workforce that can adapt to demand.
A chance to scale operations without investing in more vehicles.
Building Dubai as a Global Innovation Hub
Dubai has already positioned itself as a hub for global trade, technology, and innovation. With projects like Sandbox Dubai, the city is further cementing its reputation as a place where the future of work and business is being created.
This pilot program with Amazon shows that Dubai is serious about supporting not just big companies but also individuals and small businesses who want to grow. By combining sustainability, technology, and flexibility, Dubai is building a unique ecosystem where everyone has a chance to succeed.
The new on-foot delivery program launched by Dubai Future Foundation and Amazon UAE is more than just a pilot project. It represents Dubai’s broader strategy of creating flexible, sustainable, and innovative economic models that serve society while preparing for the future.
From reducing traffic and pollution to giving individuals new income opportunities, the program is a strong example of how public and private partnerships can bring real change. With Sandbox Dubai and the D33 Agenda, Dubai is not just planning for the future—it is actively building it today.
