Daniel Gross, who was the chief executive and co-founder of Safe Superintelligence Inc. (SSI), has joined Meta Platforms’ newly formed superintelligence lab. This move shows how big companies are fighting to hire top AI experts. Many call it an “AI talent war” because tech giants want the best minds to build smarter artificial intelligence systems.
Gross will work on artificial intelligence products in Meta’s superintelligence unit. His spokesperson Lulu Meservey confirmed this news. Recently, Meta restructured its AI division and hired many famous AI scientists. Their aim is to build artificial general intelligence (AGI). AGI is a type of AI that can think and solve problems like humans or even better.

Gross left SSI just a few months after it started. SSI was launched with the goal of building superintelligent AI systems that are safe and aligned with human values. On Friday, Ilya Sutskever, who co-founded SSI with Gross and was the former chief scientist at OpenAI, said that Gross had stepped down from his role at SSI. Now, Ilya Sutskever will take over as the CEO of SSI.
Gross did not mention Meta directly in his farewell message on X (formerly Twitter). However, he wrote, “The company’s future is very bright, and I expect miracles to follow.” This shows he still believes SSI will do well in the future.
Daniel Gross has worked in many big roles in Silicon Valley. He co-founded Cue, an AI-powered search startup. Apple bought Cue in 2013. After Apple bought Cue, Gross worked on AI and search projects at Apple until 2017. Then he became a partner at Y Combinator, a famous startup accelerator that helps new companies grow. Gross is known for building strong teams and creating AI products that people use daily.
Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, wants to lead the AI race. Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, has been meeting with top AI experts. Reports say he even invites them to his homes in Palo Alto and Lake Tahoe to discuss work opportunities.
Meta wants to build superintelligent AI systems that can think and solve problems like humans. To do this, they need the best AI scientists in the world. By hiring people like Gross, Meta is making sure they have strong leaders in their AI team.
Daniel Gross is not the only famous person who joined Meta’s superintelligence team. Nat Friedman, the former CEO of GitHub and Gross’s long-time collaborator, has also joined Meta. He now co-leads Meta’s superintelligence initiative with Alexandr Wang. Alexandr Wang is the former chief executive of Scale AI.
This shows that Meta is building a powerful team by hiring people who have led successful companies before. With these new leaders, Meta plans to create AI products that will change the way people use technology.
Gross and Friedman also run a venture capital firm called NFDG. This firm invests in new tech startups. The Wall Street Journal reported that Meta has offered to buy a minority stake in NFDG’s funds. This means Meta wants to invest in the same startups that NFDG supports, creating a deeper business partnership between them.
Meta has big dreams for AI. The company wants to build AGI, which is artificial intelligence that can think, learn, and understand the world like a human. Right now, AI can only do specific tasks like writing text, making images, or answering questions. But AGI will be able to think about many things and connect different ideas, just like our brain does.
To make AGI, companies need top-level researchers, huge computing power, and lots of data. Meta is spending billions of dollars to make this possible. It also wants to make sure that AI systems are safe and do not harm people. This is why it is called “Safe Superintelligence.”
Gross’s decision to leave his own company SSI and join Meta shows that big tech companies still attract top talent. Even though SSI was started to build superintelligent AI, Gross chose to work at Meta. Some experts believe that Meta offers more resources, computing power, and a chance to work on bigger projects.
His departure might affect SSI, but with Ilya Sutskever taking over as CEO, SSI still has strong leadership. Sutskever is known as one of the world’s best AI scientists. He was one of the co-founders of OpenAI and helped build many advanced AI models.
The AI world is changing fast. Companies like Meta, Google DeepMind, OpenAI, and Anthropic are competing to build the smartest AI systems. This competition is called the “AI talent war.” Every company wants to hire the best minds to stay ahead.
When top leaders like Daniel Gross move to big companies, it shows how important AI is becoming for our future. These scientists and leaders will decide how AI will be used in our lives, from education and health to business and entertainment.
Daniel Gross’s move from SSI to Meta is another big step in the AI talent war. Meta now has Gross, Nat Friedman, and Alexandr Wang leading its superintelligence efforts. With Mark Zuckerberg personally involved in building this team, Meta wants to make sure it leads the AI race globally.
At the same time, SSI will continue its mission under Ilya Sutskever’s leadership. The world will be watching to see how both companies build safe and powerful AI systems that can help humanity in the years to come.
