The Japanese Shogi Association has formally apologized to star shogi player Kana Fukuma after her outcry about rules that bar pregnant players from title matches close to their due dates. Currently, regulations require players in this situation to be replaced, resulting in the loss of titles and competitive opportunities.
Kana Fukuma, a leading figure in Japan's shogi scene, argues that such rules compel women to make tough decisions between family and career advancement, labeling it a significant infringement on reproductive rights. At a recent press conference, she voiced her desire for the association to allow maternity leave for female players without risk of demotion or forfeiting titles.
Under the current guidelines, pregnant shogi players must refrain from competitions from six weeks before their expected delivery until eight weeks post-birth—an extensive 14-week window during which they automatically lose their competitive positions. Fukuma shared her personal struggles, revealing her reluctance to start a family while climbing the ranks in shogi, which she views as her life’s dedication. Prior to welcoming her first child in December 2024, she had to opt-out of critical tournaments due to pregnancy-related health issues.
In a written petition to the association, Fukuma recommended several adjustments, such as altering match dates or locations for pregnant players, permitting participation during pregnancy when health allows, and ensuring titles remain secure during maternity leave. She underscored the need for a system that prioritizes both maternal health and fair play, which would aid in the career continuity of female players.
The Shogi Association acknowledged her concerns and expressed a willingness to review the rules after consulting with experts. They reiterated that any modifications would carefully consider both player safety and the integrity of title contests.
Fukuma’s position has ignited a vibrant discussion online. Critics have labeled the current regulations as outdated and biased, while others have drawn comparisons to professional sports. On forums like Reddit, users pointed out that tennis athletes returning from maternity are often afforded “protected rankings,” allowing them to compete based on previous standings rather than starting anew, a model that could be beneficial in shogi.
This dialogue has shed light on broader concerns regarding women in competitive sports, emphasizing the urgent need for policies that nurture both family responsibilities and professional ambitions. Observers from various fields are keenly watching, as any reforms in shogi could pave the way for changes across other competitive arenas in Japan and throughout Asia, ensuring that skilled women don’t have to compromise their careers for family life.
