Milan 2026 Olympics: Rink Size Justified as NHL Stars Make Their Comeback

Organizers of the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics have addressed concerns regarding the ice rink dimensions amidst criticism from ice hockey authorities and media outlets in North America.

The Santa Giulia arena is slated to host several matches between February 6 and 22. Some individuals suggested that the rink is smaller than what NHL players typically encounter. However, organizers confirmed that the measurements are both certified and safe.

The rink will span 60 metres by 26 metres, a size that the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) has sanctioned. This dimension mirrors the rink that was utilized during the Beijing 2022 Olympics.

All relevant parties—comprising the IIHF, Olympic committee, NHL, and NHL players' union—have come to a consensus that these variations will not compromise the safety or quality of the events. This marks the return of NHL players to the Olympics for the first time since 2014.

The Santa Giulia arena is anticipated to unveil next month, hosting seven fixtures of the Italian league and cup from January 9 to 11 as a preliminary event.
