OpenAI revealed on Monday that its ChatGPT tool has introduced a new shopping feature, making it easier for users to find and purchase products online. This move intensifies the competition with Google, especially as the search giant faces mounting pressure from regulators over its dominance in the search market.
With this new shopping capability, ChatGPT continues to blur the lines between AI-driven chatbots and traditional search engines, signaling OpenAI’s growing ambition to challenge Google in a sector that the tech giant has largely controlled for years.

In a post on X, OpenAI shared that search functionality has become one of their fastest-growing features, with over 1 billion web searches just in the last week. This reflects the increasing importance of the search aspect of ChatGPT as it tries to compete directly with the established search engines.
The newly launched feature allows users to shop through simple, natural conversations. Instead of scrolling through endless lists of search results, users can simply interact with ChatGPT to find, compare, and ask questions about various products, before being directed to merchants to complete their purchases. OpenAI emphasized that users can follow up with additional questions or request product comparisons as part of their shopping journey.
Initially, the shopping feature focuses on categories such as fashion, beauty, and home electronics. The product recommendations come directly from the web rather than paid advertisements, ensuring that users receive personalized suggestions.
Google has responded to the growing threat from AI chatbots by integrating its own AI assistant, Gemini, into its search results. Gemini offers AI-powered answers above traditional links to websites, aiming to keep up with the rise of AI-driven solutions like ChatGPT.
The rivalry between OpenAI and Google intensified recently after an OpenAI executive hinted that the company might consider purchasing Chrome if Google were required to sell the browser as part of an ongoing antitrust case in the United States. This indicates the stakes involved in this battle for supremacy in search and AI-powered tools.
