Canada’s Prime Minister, Mark Carney, has said that the country’s old trade relationship with the United States is now “over.” He made this statement on Thursday, March 27, after US President Donald Trump announced high taxes on Canadian cars.
Carney, who is also leading a special government team on US relations, said that these new taxes are forcing Canada to rethink its economy. He said that Canada must now find “reliable” trade partners instead of depending too much on the US.

“The old relationship we had with the United States, based on deep trade ties and close security and military cooperation, is over,” Carney said. He also added, “The time will come for a big discussion to change our security and trade relationship.”
His statement came one day after Trump announced a 25% tax on imported cars. Trump believes this tax will help American car factories, but experts say it could also hurt companies that rely on parts and materials from other countries.
Canada’s car industry is very important to its economy. Cars are the country’s second-largest export, and the industry provides jobs for 125,000 people directly. Another 500,000 Canadians work in businesses that depend on the car industry. If the new tax makes it harder for Canadian car companies to sell their products, many jobs could be at risk.
Carney’s words suggest that Canada is now preparing to reduce its dependence on the US. The government will likely look for new trading partners and ways to protect its industries.
The full effect of these taxes is not clear yet, but it is certain that Canada and the US will need to rethink their trade relationship. In the coming months, there may be new trade talks and economic plans to adjust to these changes.
