Atletico Madrid secured a dominant 3-0 victory over their city rivals Rayo Vallecano, strengthening their grip on third place in La Liga. The win came at home after a disappointing 1-0 loss to Las Palmas, leaving their title hopes slim. With the three points, Diego Simeone’s side reached 66 points, six points clear of fourth-placed Athletic Bilbao.

The match started off with a bang as Atletico took the lead within the first few minutes. Norwegian striker Alexander Sorloth headed home a cross from Giuliano Simeone just three minutes into the game. Sorloth almost doubled his tally shortly after, but Rayo’s goalkeeper Augusto Batalla made a crucial save to deny him.
The home side continued to press, and their efforts were rewarded again just before the halftime break. Conor Gallagher rose above the Rayo defenders to meet a perfectly placed cross from Rodrigo De Paul, scoring Atletico's second goal of the match.
In the second half, Atletico kept the pressure on, and Julian Alvarez sealed the win in the 77th minute. The Argentine striker finished off a brilliant assist from substitute Antoine Griezmann, tapping the ball into the net with ease to make it 3-0.
Alvarez, who has been in great form this season with 27 goals in all competitions, reflected on the match, saying, “I am happy on a personal level. I try to improve every day. I don't look at statistics. We have to keep working... We know it's not easy (to win the league), but we're focusing on ourselves.”
Despite the scoreline, Rayo Vallecano made several attempts to threaten Atletico’s goal, especially before halftime and throughout the second half. However, their efforts were thwarted by Atletico’s goalkeeper Jan Oblak, who made several vital saves to keep his clean sheet intact. Isi Palazon and Alvaro Garcia both had good chances, but Oblak was in top form.
Rayo’s defeat leaves them in 11th place with 41 points, five points away from a spot in European competition next season. Despite the loss, Rayo’s forward Palazon remained optimistic and praised his team’s performance. He said, “Despite the result, I think Rayo fans can feel proud. We lacked a cutting edge in front of goal. We had our chances. They have a great goalkeeper.”
Atletico Madrid’s focus is now on securing third place, while Rayo Vallecano will need to regroup and improve their form if they hope to push for a European spot in the remaining matches of the season.
