Actor Arjun Rampal returns to a dark and powerful role in the upcoming spy thriller Dhurandhar, where he plays a cold and menacing ISI official. The film’s trailer, released on Tuesday, immediately sparked conversation for its opening sequence, which features an extremely graphic torture scene performed by Arjun’s character. The moment has already created strong reactions online, ranging from shock to admiration.
The trailer opens with Arjun brutally torturing a captive, using multiple hooks and inflicting severe pain. Many viewers have found the visuals unsettling, with some calling the violence excessive. Others have praised director Aditya Dhar for daring to portray raw and uncomfortable realism rarely depicted in mainstream Indian cinema.
At the Mumbai trailer launch, Arjun was asked how he reacted when the scene was first narrated to him. He chose not to elaborate, saying he finds the process behind a scene uninteresting to discuss and preferred focusing on the film’s value. He expressed admiration for Aditya Dhar, calling the day special because of the director’s dedication to creating a unique film.
Arjun unintentionally shared another detail at the event — the name of Ranveer Singh’s character. While the trailer keeps the protagonist’s identity hidden, Arjun mentioned that throughout the two-year shoot, he “never saw Ranveer once, only Hamza,” revealing the character’s name without realizing it.
Dhurandhar draws inspiration from the Lyari Gang Wars in Pakistan and the covert operations linked to Indian intelligence. The film features a strong ensemble including Ranveer Singh, Sanjay Dutt, R Madhavan, Akshaye Khanna, Sara Arjun, and Rakesh Bedi. Several roles in the film are based on real individuals.
The film is scheduled to release in theatres on December 5.
