With only a year and a half remaining until the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the 11 host cities in the U.S. are not only preparing for international fans but also focusing on creating a lasting legacy. City officials, urban planners, and sports organizations have come together to announce a range of ambitious projects designed to have a significant impact long after the tournament concludes.
The U.S., which is co-hosting the event with Canada and Mexico, will host 60 out of the 80 matches, including the final. This has sparked a movement in cities such as Los Angeles, New York, Dallas, and Atlanta to leverage this opportunity for a long-term transformation.
Infrastructure & Transit Upgrades:
Cities like Atlanta and Philadelphia are using the World Cup as a springboard to fast-track metro expansions, airport upgrades, and stadium renovations—many of which were already overdue.
Stadium Sustainability:
Several host venues are aiming for net-zero carbon emissions, including Levi’s Stadium in San Francisco and SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. Green energy, smart water systems, and digital fan management will be integrated into game-day operations.
Grassroots Football Development:
A key highlight is the renewed push to develop youth soccer programs in underserved communities, with cities like Kansas City and Boston allocating funds to build new turf fields, offer free coaching clinics, and promote girls’ participation in sports.
Job Creation & Economic Stimulus:
The World Cup is expected to create over 40,000 temporary jobs and inject $5 billion+ into the U.S. economy. Host cities are targeting this boost toward local hiring, minority-owned businesses, and neighborhood revitalization efforts.
“This is about more than matches. It’s about using the global spotlight to deliver real, lasting value to our communities,” said Dan Garber, Commissioner of Major League Soccer (MLS).
“From climate action to urban mobility, we’re setting a benchmark for how mega-events should be executed,” noted Max Dunn, Project Lead for Dallas 2026.
While football fans will enjoy state-of-the-art venues, enhanced fan zones, and world-class entertainment, local residents will reap long-term benefits—from cleaner transit systems to revitalized public parks. Some cities are even planning permanent "Football Legacy Districts"—mixed-use spaces designed to host sports, concerts, and community events post-2026.
