Mumbai Indians’ young spinner, Vignesh Puthur, had a dream debut in the IPL 2025 match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Sunday. The 24-year-old left-arm wrist spinner made an immediate impact by taking three crucial wickets, including that of CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and power-hitter Shivam Dube.
Puthur was brought in as the impact player, replacing MI’s senior batter Rohit Sharma. He made his mark right away, dismissing Gaikwad in his very first over. Gaikwad, who was looking dangerous, tried to hit a big shot but ended up getting caught in the deep by Will Jacks.
The young spinner didn’t stop there. In his next over, he got Shivam Dube out. Dube, aiming for a big shot, mistimed his hit and was caught at long-on by Tilak Varma. Puthur continued to bowl with confidence and later claimed the wicket of Deepak Hooda, who managed to score only 3 runs. The youngster ended with impressive figures of 3 wickets for 32 runs in his debut match.

A Rising Star from Kerala
Puthur’s inspiring journey is one of hard work and determination. The youngster hails from Malappuram, Kerala, and comes from a humble background. His father is an autorickshaw driver and his mother is a homemaker.
Interestingly, Puthur started his cricketing career as a medium-pace bowler, but his life changed when local cricketer Mohammed Sherif suggested that he switch to leg-spin. Taking the advice seriously, he worked on his new skill and soon made a name for himself.
Puthur has not yet played for Kerala’s senior team but has represented the state at the U-14 and U-19 levels. He currently plays for Alleppey Ripples in the Kerala Cricket League. The talented spinner has also featured in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL).
Earlier this year, Puthur was sent to South Africa as a net bowler for MI Cape Town in the SA20 League, where he gained valuable experience. Mumbai Indians signed him for his base price of ₹30 lakh in the IPL auction.
CSK Clinches a Nervy Win
Despite Puthur’s brilliant spell, Mumbai Indians couldn’t defend their total of 155/9. Noor Ahmad (4/18) and Khaleel Ahmed (3/29) were the stars with the ball for CSK, helping restrict MI to a modest score.
Chennai Super Kings chased the target with a mix of caution and aggression. Skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad led from the front, scoring a quick 53 runs off 22 balls, which included six fours and three sixes. This was his fastest IPL half-century.
Though wickets kept falling at the other end, Rachin Ravindra held his ground. He played a calm yet attacking innings of 65 not out off 45 balls, hitting two fours and four sixes. His steady knock helped CSK secure a four-wicket win.
For Mumbai Indians, Puthur’s performance was the biggest positive, despite their loss. Interestingly, MI has not won their opening match in the IPL since 2012, but the debut of Vignesh Puthur gave their fans a reason to be hopeful for the rest of the season.
