UN Says Israel Wall Crosses Blue Line, Blocking Lebanese Land

A new survey by the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has revealed that a concrete wall built by the Israeli military crosses the Blue Line — the de facto border separating Lebanon from Israel and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. The finding has sparked renewed concern over rising tension along one of the region’s most sensitive frontiers.

UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric confirmed on Friday that the survey, completed last month, found that the IDF-constructed T-wall extends into Lebanese territory, making over 4,000 square meters — nearly an acre — inaccessible to local residents.

A Violation With Real-World Impact

The Blue Line, mapped by the United Nations in 2000 to confirm Israel’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon, is not an officially demarcated international border but serves as the working separation line. Any change, crossing, or construction over it is considered a violation of UN resolutions.

According to Dujarric, the wall’s placement has directly restricted Lebanese civilians’ access to land they routinely rely on, heightening local frustration in an already volatile area.

“This concrete structure has effectively cut off more than 4,000 square meters of Lebanese territory from its population,” he said, emphasizing the need for calm and respect for UN-mapped boundaries.

A Region on Edge

The revelation comes amid already heightened tension along the Lebanon-Israel border, where exchanges of fire between Israeli forces and Hezbollah have continued for months. Both sides have accused the other of escalating provocations, and UNIFIL has repeatedly urged restraint.

While the IDF has not publicly responded to the UN’s survey findings, Israel has previously defended border fortifications as necessary for security. Lebanon, meanwhile, sees such structures as encroachments that threaten sovereignty and stability.

UN Calls for Dialogue and De-Escalation

Dujarric reiterated that the UN is urging both sides to engage through established communication channels to prevent misunderstandings from spiraling into wider conflict.

“Respecting the Blue Line is essential to maintaining stability,” he said. “UNIFIL continues to work closely with both parties to address violations and reduce tensions.”

Why It Matters Now

The latest revelation adds yet another layer to an already complex geopolitical landscape in the region. With tensions simmering on multiple fronts, even minor border disputes carry the risk of rapid escalation. The UN’s findings underscore the urgent need for diplomatic engagement — and the potential consequences of letting unresolved disputes linger.

As both Lebanon and Israel navigate deep internal political and security challenges, the responsibility to prevent further deterioration at the border remains crucial.
