Washington, Nov 15, 2025 — In a highly unusual move, U.S. President Donald Trump has requested the Justice Department to investigate possible ties between the late financier Jeffrey Epstein and prominent Democrats, including former President Bill Clinton and financial giant JPMorgan. The announcement comes amid renewed scrutiny of Trump’s own connections to Epstein, following the release of thousands of documents by a congressional committee earlier this week.
Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed that Jay Clayton, the Manhattan-based federal prosecutor, will lead the investigation. According to Trump, the probe is intended to shift focus from his personal association with Epstein and emphasize alleged links to the Democratic Party. “Epstein was a Democrat, and he is the Democrat’s problem, not the Republican’s problem,” Trump wrote on social media.
The Epstein scandal has long been a political thorn for Trump, as he previously amplified conspiracy theories about Epstein to his supporters. These theories claim that federal authorities may have covered up Epstein’s ties to influential figures. Trump’s call for a federal inquiry follows a pattern of using the Justice Department to target perceived political adversaries, including former FBI Director James Comey and New York State Attorney General Letitia James.
Legal experts have voiced concerns over Trump’s request. Patrick J. Cotter, a former federal prosecutor, described it as “outrageously inappropriate” for a sitting president to direct investigations against private citizens, warning that such actions risk undermining the legitimacy of any resulting cases. Judges can dismiss charges stemming from investigations deemed politically motivated, a principle known as “vindictive prosecution.”
Alongside Clinton, Trump also requested probes into former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers and LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman, both mentioned in the 20,000 documents released by the House Oversight Committee. All three have denied any wrongdoing. Clinton’s office emphasized that the documents demonstrate he knew nothing of Epstein’s criminal activities, while Hoffman and Summers also defended their associations as professional or philanthropic in nature.
JPMorgan, Epstein’s bank from 1998 to 2013, stated that it regrets its historical dealings but did not facilitate any illegal activities. The bank had paid $290 million to Epstein’s victims in 2023, following allegations of overlooking red flags in his financial dealings.
The new investigation follows increasing political pressure as Congress prepares to vote on legislation requiring the Justice Department to release all records related to Epstein, a move expected to reveal further details about the late financier’s network. Despite Trump’s claims, no credible evidence has emerged implicating Clinton, Summers, or Hoffman in Epstein’s sex trafficking operations.
The unfolding situation underscores the intersection of politics, law, and high-profile scandals in the U.S., as Trump continues to navigate both criticism and loyalist support within his party. The probe, and its potential ramifications, is likely to shape public discourse and political dynamics heading into the 2026 midterm elections.
This development comes as part of the broader scrutiny of Epstein’s social and professional circles, which included international figures such as the late Prince Andrew of the United Kingdom. While Trump insists he cut ties with Epstein before the financier’s 2008 conviction, questions about his prior interactions continue to fuel media coverage and political debate.
