The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has referred the accused in a high-profile Sudan arms smuggling case to judicial authorities, following the completion of an extensive investigation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) announced on Friday.

The case involves the arrest of a cell attempting to illegally transfer military equipment to Sudan’s Port Sudan Authority via UAE territory. The incident, which took place on April 30, triggered a swift and thorough investigation by UAE authorities, highlighting the country’s strict stance against illicit arms trafficking.

In an official statement, MoFA emphasized that the referral to judicial authorities underscores the UAE’s “unwavering commitment to preventing any attempts to misuse its territories, ports, or airspace for illicit activities, including attempts to smuggle weapons to any of the warring parties in Sudan’s civil war, or to other conflict zones.”

The UAE has consistently taken proactive measures to combat transnational organized crime and ensure the country is not used as a transit hub for illegal arms. By referring the accused to judicial authorities, the UAE not only enforces its national laws but also aligns itself with international security efforts, including compliance with UN Security Council resolutions and broader international legal frameworks.

The Ministry also stressed that the case demonstrates the UAE’s ongoing responsibility to safeguard international peace and security. “Our strict handling of this case reflects our commitment to advancing global efforts to curb illegal arms flows and to uphold the rule of law,” the statement read.

The investigation revealed that the smuggling attempt was highly organized, highlighting the need for vigilant enforcement of regulations governing the use of the UAE’s ports and airspace. By preventing such illegal activities, the UAE aims to ensure that its infrastructure is not exploited to fuel conflicts abroad.

Experts note that this move comes at a time when the civil war in Sudan continues to destabilize the region, with illicit arms trafficking playing a critical role in exacerbating the conflict. The UAE’s decisive action sends a clear message that attempts to exploit its territory for unlawful arms transfers will face swift legal consequences.

The referral of the accused to judicial authorities marks a significant milestone in UAE efforts to strengthen regional security and demonstrates its position as a responsible global actor in preventing the spread of illegal weapons.

As the judicial process unfolds, the international community will be closely watching the case as a benchmark for cooperation in the fight against arms trafficking, particularly in volatile regions such as Sudan, where unregulated arms flows can have devastating humanitarian and geopolitical consequences.

The UAE has reiterated that it will continue to monitor and combat any such illicit activities within its borders, ensuring that its policies remain aligned with international law and the broader objectives of peace and security.
