West Virginia coach Mark Kellogg started the second half with only two words written on his board: “Believe” and “Breathe.” His team had just five eligible players left after several ejections, and things looked almost impossible. But Kellogg wanted his players to stay calm, trust themselves, and keep fighting no matter what. His message reached the team at the perfect time, and it became the foundation for one of the most surprising wins of the season.

Kellogg said this was the craziest game of his coaching career. He felt proud of his team’s strength, courage, and grit. He said West Virginia always talks about representing the fighting spirit of the state, and this game showed exactly that. With only five players, and only one of them being a regular starter, the Mountaineers kept steady, avoided foul trouble, and stayed patient. Somehow, they turned an impossible situation into a 57-49 victory over No. 15 Duke in front of a sold-out crowd at Colonial Hall at the Greenbrier.

Even though the game was officially listed as a neutral-site contest, the crowd made it feel like a West Virginia home game. More than 1,200 fans filled the ballroom, cheering loudly in blue and gold. After the win, “Take Me Home, Country Roads” played through the speakers. Kellogg didn’t expect to hear the song since they were three hours away from Morgantown, but he happily gathered his five players and celebrated the special moment together.

The entire game shifted because of a scuffle at the end of the first half. Duke led 23-20 when Duke’s Jordan Wood shouted “let’s go” in the face of West Virginia’s Jordan Harrison. Harrison pushed back, and more players joined in. After a long review, officials ejected Harrison and Wood for fighting. Five additional West Virginia players were also ejected for leaving the bench area. Duke players Ashlon Jackson and Arianna Roberson received Flagrant 1 fouls. This left West Virginia with only five eligible players for the entire second half.

With so few players left, Kellogg had no choice but to create a new gameplan immediately. Sydney Shaw was the only starter remaining, and she had not scored in the first half. The other four players were transfers or bench players who were not used to big minutes. Kellogg put the ball in Shaw’s hands on offense and switched to a 2-3 zone on defense to avoid fouling. His team had to play smart, slow, and careful. They could not afford a single foul-out.

Surprisingly, the new plan worked better than anyone expected. West Virginia outscored Duke 24-9 in the third quarter. The Blue Devils looked confused against the zone defense and struggled to attack. They missed easy shots and turned the ball over repeatedly. West Virginia found confidence, energy, and rhythm. By the end of the quarter, the Mountaineers held a double-digit lead, something almost nobody believed possible after halftime.

Duke coach Kara Lawson said West Virginia deserved the win. She praised the Mountaineers’ fight and energy but admitted her own team did not respond well after the halftime chaos. She said only a couple of her players gave the right effort and that it was her responsibility to have the team ready. She felt Duke came out flat and never recovered.

West Virginia stayed strong in the final quarter. Shaw finished with 16 points, seven rebounds, and three assists. Rivière added 12 points and eight rebounds. The Mountaineers made 14 of 18 free throws in the second half, while Duke missed many layups and committed too many turnovers. Even though Duke cut the lead to four with 36 seconds left, West Virginia closed out the game by hitting key free throws and staying composed.

When the final buzzer sounded, West Virginia celebrated a historic win. Rivière flexed toward the cheering fans, and the team shared a quiet but emotional joy. Kellogg said he hopes this moment becomes a turning point for the team. West Virginia improved to 4-0 on the season. This win proved something simple and powerful: West Virginia handled hard better.
