Leg swelling is a common problem that many people experience, especially after long hours of standing or sitting. In most cases, it is not dangerous and goes away on its own. But sometimes, swelling can be a sign of a serious health issue. Dr Jeremy London, a heart surgeon with 25 years of experience, recently explained how to understand the difference and when to take swelling seriously.

According to Dr London, swelling in the legs, ankles, or feet is called edema. It happens when extra fluid leaks out of the blood vessels and collects in the tissues. This makes the legs look puffy, feel heavy, and can even make walking difficult. While some causes are simple, others need medical attention.

He explained that if the veins in the legs are not working properly, blood can stay in the lower legs instead of moving back to the heart. This condition is known as chronic venous insufficiency. It can lead to long-term swelling and discomfort.

Swelling can also occur if the heart, kidneys, or liver are not functioning well. When these organs cannot manage fluid properly, the fluid can build up and settle in the lower part of the body. This type of swelling is a warning sign and should not be ignored.

Some medicines, like those for blood pressure, pain, or hormones, may also cause swelling. Dr London said it is important to tell your doctor if swelling starts after taking a new medication.

Another cause is a problem in the lymphatic system. This is the body’s drainage system. When it becomes blocked or overloaded, it can lead to swelling called lymphedema. This condition often needs long-term care.

Dr London shared simple ways to reduce swelling. He said movement is very helpful. Walking helps the leg muscles push the blood back toward the heart. Elevating the legs above heart level can also reduce swelling. Compression stockings are another useful tool, as they help push extra fluid out of the tissues.

But he warned that sudden swelling, swelling in only one leg, or swelling with pain, chest discomfort, or trouble breathing can be signs of a blood clot. This is a medical emergency and needs immediate attention. He advised people not to wait if they notice these symptoms.

Most swelling is not dangerous, but Dr London said it is important to listen to your body. Early attention can prevent serious problems. Taking simple steps like moving more, lifting your legs, and checking for unusual symptoms can help keep you safe and healthy.

This information can guide people to understand their symptoms better, but it is not a replacement for medical advice. Anyone with concerns should speak with a doctor.
