Taylor Swift has officially taken back the rights to her first six albums in a new deal with Shamrock Capital. This comes six years after they were sold to Scooter Braun’s company, Ithaca Holdings, without her knowledge.
The announcement was made in a handwritten letter shared on Taylor’s website. She described the moment as emotional and said she had dreamed of this day for years but started to lose hope it would ever happen.

“I’ve cried happy tears at random moments since hearing the news,” Taylor wrote. “I finally get to say these words: All of the music I’ve ever made now belongs to me.”
How It Started
Back in 2019, Taylor found out that her original music—her "masters"—was sold to Scooter Braun. She said she wasn’t given a fair chance to buy them herself, even though she tried for years.
Instead of selling them to her, she was offered a deal to “earn back” one album for each new one she created, which she felt was unfair.
She also spoke out about how Braun had treated her badly over the years and said the sale felt like her life’s work was being taken away.
What Happened Next
Later, Braun sold Taylor’s music catalogue to Shamrock Capital in 2020 for a reported $300 million. Now, in 2025, Taylor and Shamrock have reached a deal that gives her full ownership again. She thanked the company for treating the deal with kindness and understanding.
“This was a business deal for them, but they understood how personal this was for me,” she wrote.
Since 2019, Taylor has been re-recording her old albums so she could own the new versions. So far, she’s re-released Fearless, Red, Speak Now, and 1989. Only two are left: her debut album, Taylor Swift, and reputation.
Taylor has owned her master recordings starting from her 2019 album Lover, released under Republic Records.
In Short
Taylor Swift now owns the rights to her first six albums again after a long battle. She called it a dream come true and a big win for artists everywhere.
