During a recent athletics event in Kerala, an inspiring scene unfolded as Sister Sabina, adorned in her religious habit and barefoot, took her position at the starting line. With a burst of speed, the seasoned athlete, who has spent years teaching physical education, gracefully soared over the hurdles, clinching victory in the 55-plus category at the State Masters Athletics meet. Her triumphant performance captivated the crowd, showcasing that age and attire are no barriers to determination.
Hailing from Ennappara in Kasaragod, Kerala, Sister Sabina's dedication to sports is remarkable. Her passion for athletics emerged during her school years when she quickly made a name for herself in hurdle races, representing her school at national levels by Class 9.
Continuing her athletic journey through college, she competed in inter-university events, although her path led her towards a life focused on service and spirituality.
In 1993, Sister Sabina relocated to Wayanad, intertwining her love for sports with her role as a physical education teacher. As an educator, she has motivated countless students to embrace an active lifestyle, earning their admiration for her humility and positive spirit.
Though her competitive days were over, she remained passionate about athletics, constantly encouraging her students to follow their dreams while sharing tales from her own athletic past.
Her participation in the recent State Masters meet held special significance, as she opted to run in the 55-plus category, allowing her to relive cherished memories before stepping away from her teaching career. Barefoot and dressed in her religious garb, she exemplified that true passion knows no bounds.
As the race commenced, Sister Sabina's technique echoed her glory days, captivating the audience, which soon erupted in cheers with each hurdle she cleared. Crossing the finish line first, she was met with a standing ovation — her victory symbolizing the celebration of determination.
Post-race, Sister Sabina shared a heartfelt sentiment: “Next March, I will retire from my role as a physical education teacher. Competing one last time at the State Masters meet was important to me.” Her commitment to athletics shone through her farewell message.
The excitement surrounding her race quickly gained traction on social media, with many hailing her for her inspiring spirit. Sister Sabina has become a beacon for all ages, demonstrating that passion knows no bounds.
To her students and colleagues, her victory signifies far more than a trophy; it encapsulates that perseverance can defy any limitation. Balancing spirituality and athleticism, she embodies the essence of success through passionate devotion.
As she approaches retirement, Sister Sabina’s lasting legacy extends beyond the race track. Her life story is a rich tapestry of humility, faith, and dedication — principles that she has instilled in each student. Her latest triumph serves as a fitting conclusion to a remarkable journey, ensuring she remains a cherished figure in Kerala’s athletic community for years to come.
