In a stunning display, Jannik Sinner launched his Erste Bank Open journey with a decisive win against Daniel Altmaier, scoring 6-0, 6-2 in only 58 minutes. The 24-year-old Italian, who clinched the title in Vienna the previous year, demonstrated remarkable skill, landing 19 winners and making just seven unforced errors without facing a single break point. This victory marks his fastest of the 2025 season and extends his remarkable indoor hard court winning streak to 17 matches.
Sinner’s supremacy was clear right from the first set, as his powerful ball-striking and steady rhythm overwhelmed Altmaier. “I felt everything was working perfectly in the first set,” he remarked. “On indoor courts, you must be cautious; it can become tough to break if your opponent serves well. However, I’m pleased with my performance today, both in terms of gameplay and my overall feeling as I start the tournament on a high note.”
Earlier this year, Sinner's quickest win occurred in Cincinnati against Daniel Elahi Galan, clocking 59 minutes. His flawless execution against Altmaier not only shows his readiness but also sets him up strongly for the ATP 500 event in Vienna.
Next, Sinner is scheduled to meet compatriot Flavio Cobolli, who triumphed over Tomas Machac with a score of 7-6(6), 6-2 in his opening match. The clash between the two Italian players promises excitement, as both aim to advance further in the tournament.
Other notable performances on the opening day included Daniil Medvedev, who kicked off his Vienna campaign with a win over Nuno Borges, 6-4, 6-7(7), 6-2. Despite facing two match points during a tense second-set tiebreak, Medvedev rebounded impressively, remaining on track for a spot at the Nitto ATP Finals. His next opponent, Corentin Moutet, poses a challenge in a rematch of their Almaty final.
Matteo Berrettini also advanced, overcoming Alexei Popyrin 7-6(5), 6-3. The Italian is eyeing his fourth consecutive quarter-final appearance in Vienna and may face Cameron Norrie next. Third seed Alex de Minaur continued his pursuit of a second ATP 500 title this year, winning 6-4, 6-4 against Austrian wildcard Filip Misolic.
Tallon Griekspoor made a mark by securing the first quarter-final spot after a close victory over Brandon Nakashima, 7-6(4), 7-6(2). He now awaits the outcome of the match between second seed Alexander Zverev and qualifier Matteo Arnaldi, promising another thrilling showdown.
The Erste Bank Open has commenced with stellar performances from leading players, showcasing the competitive nature of the tournament and Sinner's formidable form as he looks to defend his title. The opening day's excitement lays the groundwork for exhilarating matches in the rounds ahead.
