Mike Matheson netted the game-winner just one minute into overtime, leading the Montreal Canadiens to a 2-1 triumph over the Calgary Flames at the Scotiabank Saddledome on Wednesday night. The goal, assisted by rookie Ivan Demidov, marked the Canadiens’ second consecutive win and sixth victory in their last seven matches.
Matheson praised the synergy with teammates Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson, whose aggressive approach set up the game-winning play. “The play was fantastic by ‘Demi’, I just had to finish it,” Matheson reflected post-game.
Zack Bolduc got Montreal on the board first with a power-play score at 17:09 of the opening period, receiving a perfect pass from Suzuki and directing the puck past Flames' goalie Dustin Wolf. Jakub Dobes stood tall in goal for Montreal, making 36 saves and ensuring Calgary’s chances remained limited despite their offensive vigor.
Calgary evened the score in the third with Adam Klapka’s goal at 5:56. Klapka intercepted a pass from Canadiens defenseman Noah Dobson and shot swiftly past Dobes to tie things up at 1-1. Wolf managed 26 saves but faced a frustrating stretch as the Flames fell to 0-6-1 in their last seven outings.
Coach Martin St. Louis commended the team's performance in overtime, stating, “It’s always rewarding to clinch a win in overtime. The players were calculated, and our change led to the goal.” This victory marks the Canadiens' third overtime win this season, showcasing their clutch capabilities.
Demidov, with the assist on the decisive goal, now boasts eight points in his initial ten NHL games, becoming the first Canadiens player since Andrew Cassels in the 1989-90 season to achieve such a milestone. Dobes, who holds a perfect record this season, joins Wayne Thomas as the second rookie goaltender in NHL history to start multiple seasons with a 4-0-0 record.
Nick Suzuki extended his point streak to seven games, assisting on Bolduc’s goal and amassing one goal with ten assists during this stretch. Cole Caufield and Lane Hutson played crucial roles, contributing significantly on both ends of the ice during pivotal moments in overtime.
This victory enhances Montreal’s strong start to the season and illustrates their prowess under pressure. Calgary aims to rebound from this loss and return to form as they navigate through a challenging period. Both squads displayed determination, but Montreal’s blend of talented forwards and dependable goaltending ultimately secured the win in overtime.
