Abu Dhabi is making significant strides in the food sector with a forward-thinking partnership aimed at establishing a protein fermentation ecosystem within the emirate. This collaboration involves the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO), The EVERY Company, and Vivici, ready to revolutionize the alternative protein industry through cutting-edge biotechnology solutions that ensure sustainability, efficiency, and global outreach.

The process of protein fermentation utilizes microorganisms to generate high-value proteins, offering a scalable and eco-friendly alternative to traditional animal-based sources. The collaboration is investigating the establishment of a facility capable of producing 4 million liters at an industrial scale, built to meet international food safety and Halal certification standards, while also facilitating multi-tenant spaces for other protein innovators.

This initiative is a perfect fit with Abu Dhabi’s AgriFood Growth and Water Abundance (AGWA) cluster, which aims to bolster regional food security and tackle water scarcity through innovative technologies. With the global protein fermentation market expected to leap from US$3.03 billion in 2024 to US$54.04 billion by 2032, the emirate is setting itself up as a vital center for sustainable food innovation.

The venture will additionally lay down regulatory frameworks for fermented proteins in the UAE, streamlining commercial approval for both local and regional markets. Furthermore, the partnership seeks to leverage the UAE’s Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreements (CEPAs) to enhance export opportunities to booming markets in Asia, Africa, and Europe.

Beyond production, the collaboration focuses on nurturing talent by partnering with local universities, research institutions, and training providers. This initiative aims to develop a skilled workforce in biotechnology and food science, fostering knowledge transfer and positioning Abu Dhabi as a key player in next-generation food innovations.

Vivici and The EVERY Company contribute extensive expertise in precision fermentation and alternative proteins. Vivici has successfully launched nature-identical whey protein, achieving self-affirmed GRAS status in less than a year, while The EVERY Company boasts a foundational patent for its precision-fermented egg protein, paving the way for advancements in food and beverage innovation.

Through this initiative, Abu Dhabi not only enhances its food resilience but also serves as a regional leader demonstrating how science-led industries can tackle global challenges while creating economic and technological prospects.
