Strong 6.6 Earthquake Jolts Indonesia’s Banda Sea Region

A powerful 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck the Banda Sea near Indonesia’s Maluku Islands on Tuesday, according to the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ). The tremor, recorded at a depth of about 137 kilometers, was strongly felt across nearby islands but caused no immediate damage or tsunami warning, as confirmed by Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

The quake’s depth helped minimize surface impact, yet it was enough to alarm residents across eastern Indonesia. The Banda Sea lies within one of the most seismically active regions on the planet—part of the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” where several tectonic plates collide and shift constantly.

This incident follows a 6.7-magnitude earthquake that hit Papua province less than two weeks ago, highlighting the frequent seismic activity in Indonesia. The region’s geology is shaped by the complex interaction of the Australian and Sunda plates, along with smaller microplates like the Banda Sea, Timor, and Molucca Sea plates. These collisions create immense pressure beneath the Earth’s crust, occasionally releasing it through moderate to strong tremors such as Tuesday’s quake.

Despite its strength, authorities confirmed there was no tsunami threat, and life in most coastal areas continued uninterrupted after brief panic among locals.
