In Penang, a temple has officially announced the cancellation of its Aidilfitri open house, dispelling rumors regarding an alternate “unity banquet.” This situation developed in light of recent statements from local authorities suggesting a potential replacement event.
Thean Hock Keong made it clear that there are no events planned for April 11, insisting that all associated activities have been thoroughly scrapped. The temple clarified that any reports of another organization taking over organizing duties are unfounded.
Additionally, the temple distanced itself from any suggested gathering that may occur at Dewan Panorama in Bagan Ajam, indicating that such claims have only served to deepen public misunderstanding. It declared that it is not in any way linked to activities at that venue or on that date.
Tension arose after comments from Penang Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Mohamad Abdul Hamid, who suggested that a “Majlis Jamuan Perpaduan” (unity banquet) could proceed through a different organizer. The temple quickly countered this assertion, reiterating that it has no plans for any related event.
This cancellation is a direct response to orders from the Penang Islamic Religious Affairs Department, which prohibited the temple from hosting a celebration for Aidilfitri. Authorities emphasized that such festivities fall under Islamic regulations and require the proper sanctioning from the appropriate council.
In the wake of this development, the temple stated that cooperating with the directive was essential to avoid further confusion and potential issues. It highlighted its original aim of fostering community unity and was ready to serve halal meals from local suppliers.
Though disappointed, the temple encouraged both officials and community leaders to refrain from issuing unclear or conflicting statements. It underscored the importance of transparent communication to mitigate any misunderstanding and reasserted its commitment to promoting harmony within the community.
