A recent Singaporean television drama has ignited controversy in Malaysia due to its depiction of the nation as a center for fraudulent activities. This portrayal has raised concerns among various groups regarding its effects on Malaysia's international image.
The show, called Highway to Somewhere, aired from March to April and features narratives about road trips to Malaysia, including a plotline where travelers fall prey to a scam operation.
Several Chinese associations in Malaysia have voiced their worries, arguing that the series may wrongly influence foreign viewers. They caution that such a representation could damage Malaysia's reputation and lead to misconceptions about the region.
Critics emphasize that negative portrayals in media can reinforce harmful stereotypes and adversely affect vital sectors like tourism, overshadowing the country's rich culture and warmth.
In light of the criticism, screenwriter Ang Eng Tee sought to clarify that there was no intention of damaging Malaysia's image. He mentioned that the plot is inspired by actual scam occurrences and pointed out that these crimes are not confined to any one country.
The creators also noted that the show showcases Malaysia's beautiful sites, including Ipoh, Kukup, and Port Dickson. Their goal was to encourage travel and highlight lesser-known attractions alongside the main storyline.
They urged viewers to consider the series in its entirety before deciding, asserting that the narrative ultimately demonstrates law enforcement's role in combating crime while raising awareness about the global threat of scams.
