Afghanistan is bracing for worsening weather following a spate of natural calamities that have claimed at least 148 lives in recent weeks. Officials are cautioning that heightened weather patterns may pose further dangers to the affected populations.
The crisis unfolded in late March when intense rainfall triggered extensive flooding in various provinces. Overflowing rivers led to rising waters that submerged homes, agricultural land, and vital transportation routes, especially in rural regions.
Mountainous areas have faced even graver circumstances, with landslides engulfing residences and severing access to isolated communities. Rescue operations have struggled due to compromised roads and inadequate infrastructure, hampering emergency relief efforts.
Compounding the devastation was a 5.9-magnitude earthquake that struck the Hindu Kush region, exacerbating the destruction wrought by floods and landslides. This convergence of disasters has placed immense strain on already vulnerable communities.
Officials have reported over 216 injuries, with several individuals still unaccounted for. More than 1,100 homes have been destroyed, displacing countless families who urgently need shelter, food, and medical help.
Not only has the human toll been significant, but essential infrastructure has also suffered major setbacks. Roads have been washed away, crops have perished, and local livelihoods have been disrupted, raising alarms regarding long-term food security and recovery prospects.
Experts underline Afghanistan's acute vulnerability to extreme weather events, exacerbated by its geography, climatic conditions, and limited resources. As fears grow regarding continued rainfall and the potential for further calamities, authorities and humanitarian organizations are racing to deliver urgent aid and support.
