So far, OpenAI, India’s IT ministry, and Prime Minister Modi’s office have not made any comments about the visit.
India is very important to OpenAI because it has the second-largest number of users after the United States. Altman last visited in 2023, when he met with Prime Minister Modi to talk about how AI can help India’s technology.
Since then, OpenAI has faced some legal problems in India. Last year, an filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, saying it broke copyright laws. Other companies, like book publishers and media outlets, have joined the case.
OpenAI says it did nothing wrong. They claim they only use publicly available data and follow the rules. They also believe Indian courts should not deal with this case.
Altman is visiting at a time when competition in the tech world is growing. A new company from China called DeepSeek is gaining attention. Its AI assistant became more popular than OpenAI’s ChatGPT in the United States. This has caused concern about OpenAI’s position in the market.
